How To Cope With Reactions When You Stop Smoking
When you stop smoking there are inevitably going to reactions in both your body and mind. How severe and difficult to deal with these reactions will be can depend upon a variety of factors such as the type of treatments you had, how long and how heavily you smoked before you were able to quit, and whether there were already signs of smoking related illnesses before you quit. Whatever the situation, the reaction will be far easier to deal with than the effects of smoking tobacco in the first place, and they will lessen with time.
Of course, it is important to remember that most of what happens when you stop smoking is overwhelmingly positive. It is just that the few negative effects are noticed first as the body continues to withdraw from the nicotine drug. Withdrawal symptoms from nicotine are actually relatively mild, and there are many who cope with them with no aids or assistance whatsoever. This is in stark contrast to heroin and other opiates, from which it is virtually impossible to withdraw without medical treatment. If the mind is convinced that quitting is for the good of the organism, there is rarely a problem with the physical aspect.
Some of the effects of quitting smoking happen literally within minutes of the change being made. The most obvious of these is a slowing down of the heart, which is alone enough to reduce the risk of a sudden heart attack and possible death. Your chances of a long and healthy life begin to improve dramatically from the moment you quit smoking, and they continue to gather pace as time goes by. The heart can be assisted to heal with gentle exercise and the eating of healthy raw food, both of which will help to clear the toxins left by the previous smoking habit.
It is not only the heart which will benefit when you stop smoking. You will begin to notice the taste of food and the smell of flowers and other aromas far more acutely than you did before. This is because your breathing system is coming back to life after months or probably years of being overwhelmed by tobacco. Many of the people who do successfully quit smoking say that the ability to taste food again is one of the most immediately noticeable of all benefits derived from giving up. As the body begins to feel cleaner and more alive, and you breathing becomes less restricted, you should gain the incentive to keep going.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of all in what happens when you stop smoking is the fact that the lungs are able to begin the cleansing process from years of tobacco restriction and poisoning. The lungs are able to regenerate in a way which many other organs are not, for example the liver after years of alcohol abuse. In the case of the liver, any damage which has been inflicted upon it will be permanent, but the lungs can eventually regenerate to the level of health which a permanent non-smoker would have enjoyed.
Not all parts of the body have the same ability to regenerate when you stop smoking, which is why never starting to smoke will still give you the greatest possible chance of attaining longevity. However, what is done is done and if you have been smoking it is never too late to stop. Your potential lifespan increases consistently with the time that you remain smoke free, and finding the exact statistics on this can give you great incentive to carry on and become a permanent non-smoker. The benefits begin to take effect immediately when you stop smoking.
